Program Announcement:
From Jerusalem With Love
The Palestinian National Theater "Al Hakawati" is seeking the participation of three American actors and one American stage designer for an ambitious, bi-lingual Palestinian-American theater project. The project, funded through a grant from the Cultural Affairs section of the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem , is an opportunity for American theater professionals and amateurs who are interested in promoting American cultural exchange as well as learning more about the Palestinian theater movement and the Palestinian people.
The project:
The goal of this project is to produce an original theatrical production that will incorporate comedy and improvisation, drawing upon the relationship between Palestinians and Americans and addressing commonly-held stereotypes and contemporary issues. The project team will include:
American participants: Three American actors (male and female) and one stage designer
Palestinian participants: One director, one dramatist/playwright, three actors (male and female) and technical staff
Project timeline:
This project requires pre-departure preparation work (Phase 2) and an eight-week residency commitment (Phase 3 and Phase 4) from the American participants, who will reside in local accommodation in East Jerusalem. The production will take place in Al Hakawati Theater in East Jerusalem and adhere to the following schedule:
Phase 1 – November 1, 2009 – December 15, 2009: Casting selections made by Al Hakawati Theater in consultation with the U.S. Consulate General
Phase 2 – January 1, 2010 – January 31, 2010: Developing the storyboard with input from Palestinian and American program participants (communication to take place via e-mail)
Phase 3 – February 1, 2010 – March 15, 2010: American participants are in residency program in East Jerusalem. The director, playwright, stage designer, and six actors develop the play through a collaborative creative process. All work will take place at Al Hakawati Theater, five days a week (Monday-Friday) for 6-8 hours per day.
Phase 4 – March 16, 2010 – March 31, 2010: Ten performances of the play in Jerusalem and various West Bank locations to be determined (including Ramallah, Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus).
Finance:
This is a non-commercial cultural exchange program. The grant from the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem covers the participation of four Americans, as outlined above. The grant will cover the following items for each American participant:
* Round trip airfare from the U.S. to Ben Gurion International Airport via an American carrier, economy class
* ll expenses related to accommodation – including housing in East Jerusalem, meals, and incidental expenses
* A stipend for the eight-week program
