[ePalestine] aljazeera: Liberate the Illés Relief (by Maryvelma Smith O'Neil)

Liberate the Illés Relief

The Illes Relief is a prized treasure that should be returned to Geneva rather than squandered in Jerusalem.

BY Maryvelma Smith O'Neil
Last Modified: 20 Aug 2012 18:34

Deep within an ancient citadel in Jerusalem rests an extraordinarily rare relief map. It tells an intriguing tale of two cities - Jerusalem and Geneva - a tale which deserves to be heard by a wider audience.

The model relief was made by Stephan Illés, an enterprising young Hungarian Catholic, who arrived in Jerusalem in 1864. He spent his days quietly binding books to earn a living, but escaped after dark into a marvellous miniature world of his own creation. From 1872 to 1873, he painstakingly crafted a 4.5 by 5 metre (15 by 16ft) 3D model to make what came to be known as the Illés Relief - a 19th century Google Map of Jerusalem.

[ePalestine] NYT: Young Israelis Held in Attack on Arabs

Dear friends,

Sadly, not shocking for anyone closely following developments in Israel, especially their education system.

Read this and imagine what Israel will look like 5-10 years from now when these youth are conscripted into the Israeli military, given weapons, and set free in the Wild Wild West (Bank) and Gaza.

To be accurate, their is no need to look into the future, these same products of the Israeli system are armed and dangerous today, roaming the occupied Palestinian territory as well as within Israel itself.

Don't focus on the victims of the system, focus on the system itself,
Sam

Young Israelis Held in Attack on Arabs

By ISABEL KERSHNER

JERUSALEM — Seven Israeli teenagers were in custody on Monday, accused of what a police official and several witnesses described as an attempted lynching of several Palestinian youths, laying bare the undercurrent of tension in this ethnically mixed but politically divided city. A 15-year-old suspect standing outside court said, “For my part he can die, he’s an Arab.”

[ePalestine] "The Urgent Need to Prevent a Middle East War" (Patrick Seale)

Agence Global

The Urgent Need to Prevent a Middle East War

by Patrick Seale
Released: 14 Aug 2012

The Middle East is facing an acute danger of war, with unpredictable and potentially devastating consequences for the states and populations of the region. A ‘shadow war’ is already being waged -- by Israel and the United States against Iran; by a coalition of countries against Syria; and by the great powers against each other. A mere spark could set this tinder alight.

[ePalestine] WP: The Palestine Romney doesn’t know (By Zahi Khouri)

Washington Post

The Palestine Romney doesn’t know

By Zahi Khouri, Friday, August 10, 2:11 AM

I am a proud American. I am a hardworking businessman and job creator. I am a faithful Christian.

And I am Palestinian.

Much as my multiple identities might drive Mitt Romney to head scratching, it is he who needs a lesson in, to borrow his recent words, “culture and a few other things.”

[ePalestine] CP: The Murder of Arafat (By Sam Bahour)

Counterpunch

Weekend Edition August 3-5, 2012

How the Israeli Quintet Indicted Itself

The Murder of Arafat

by SAM BAHOUR

“We have to get rid of Arafat” ~Israeli defense Minister Shaul Mofaz to Prime Minister Sharon caught on an open mic, Source: Haaretz (Hebrew)

“We operated against Ahmed Yassin and Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi [two Palestinian leaders extrajudicially assassinated by Israel] when we thought the time was suitable. On the matter of Arafat we’ll operate in the same way, when we find the convenient and suitable time. One needs to find the time and to do what has to be done.”  ~ Israeli Prime Minister Sharon to Ma’ariv newspaper, Source: The Guardian

Yasser Arafat may be dead, but for all intents and purposes he lives on and continues to be a thorn in Israel’s side. Earlier this month a Swiss doctor announced that high levels of toxic polonium-210 were found on some of Arafat’s belongings. Polonium-210 is a highly radioactive substance, one that would require a nuclear reactor and expertise to produce and handle. Israel, being a nuclear power and having publicly expressed a motive for Arafat’s “elimination,” fits the description.
