A History of Money in Palestine: From the 1900s to the Present

As it is said, "Follow the money..."

Several years ago my dear friend Dr. Sreemati Mitter was back in Palestine for a visit. She shared with me a hardcopy of her Harvard dissertation which I started to read but was unable to finish at the time. Thanks to the COVID-19 lockdown, I have been able to finish reading it. An absolute must-read if you are interested in Palestine and what happened to it.

The dissertation is titled "A History of Money in Palestine: From the 1900s to the Present". At face value, it is a history of the banking sector in Historic Palestine, but in reality, it is a deep, historic, and well-documented analysis of Palestine's political economy, legal and economic resistance and resilience.

Today, Dr. Sreemati Mitter is the Kutayba Alghanim Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern History and International and Public Affairs at Brown University. She is transforming her dissertation into a book. Her profile is at https://www.brown.edu/academ…/history/people/sreemati-mitter
